Barichara sits in the department of Santander, about 1,300 metres above sea level, on a plateau overlooking the Suárez river canyon. It has no airport and no major intercity bus terminal: you get there via San Gil, the region's transport hub.

This guide covers the three realistic ways in, and when each one makes sense.

Option 1: fly via Bucaramanga (fastest)

Fly into Bucaramanga's Palonegro international airport (code BGA). From Bogotá the flight is about an hour with several daily departures; there are also connections from Medellín, Cali and other cities.

From the airport to Barichara is roughly a 3-hour drive on mountain roads. Your options:

  • Rental car at the airport itself. The most flexible option, and the one we recommend if you plan to move between Barichara, Guane, San Gil and the Chicamocha Canyon.
  • Private transfer booked in advance, picking you up at the airport and dropping you at the door.
  • Bus: airport to Bucaramanga's terminal, then a bus to San Gil (about 2.5 hours) and a regional bus to Barichara (about 45 minutes). The cheap option, but it adds time and transfers.

Best if: you are coming from outside Colombia, have few days, or are travelling with heavy luggage.

Option 2: drive from Bogotá (best for exploring)

It is a 7–8 hour drive on the Bogotá – Tunja – Barbosa – Socorro – San Gil – Barichara route. This is a mountain road, largely two-way, with slow sections through curves and freight traffic.

Practical advice:

  • Leave early, ideally before 5:00 a.m., to beat the exit from Bogotá and arrive in daylight.
  • Avoid driving back on a holiday Monday afternoon: the return to Bogotá on long weekends can easily add two or three hours.
  • Good stops along the way: Villa de Leyva (a detour), Barbosa and Socorro for lunch.
  • Tolls and fuel: there are several toll booths on the route.

Best if: you are staying several days, travelling as a family or group, or want day trips to Curití, Chicamocha and the Juan Curí waterfalls.

Option 3: bus from Bogotá (cheapest)

Buses to San Gil leave Bogotá's Salitre terminal throughout the day, with several companies running the route. The trip takes around 7 hours. Overnight buses are popular because you arrive in the morning, though sleep on a winding road is patchy.

From San Gil's terminal you take a regional bus to Barichara, departing roughly hourly and taking about 45 minutes. It is short, cheap and scenic.

Best if: you are travelling solo or as a couple, on a budget, and not in a hurry.

From San Gil

San Gil is about 20 km from Barichara. It is where nearly all regional transport arrives, and the base of Santander's adventure tourism (rafting, paragliding, caving).

  • Regional bus: roughly hourly during the day, about 45 minutes. Worth confirming the time of the last bus, especially midweek.
  • Taxi or private transfer: 30 to 40 minutes, useful if you arrive at night or with a lot of luggage.

The last stretch: reaching the house

Arbolitos de Don José is about a 10-minute drive from the centre of Barichara, surrounded by countryside. The final stretch is a well-maintained unpaved road; under normal conditions you do not need a 4x4.

A few days before you arrive we send the exact Google Maps location and agree an approximate arrival time over WhatsApp, so we can welcome you in person. If you arrive by bus in Barichara or San Gil, let us know and we will help arrange the ride up to the house.

Before you leave the city

  • Withdraw cash in Bogotá, Bucaramanga or San Gil. Barichara has few ATMs and they occasionally run out on long weekends.
  • Download the offline map of the area: some stretches of road have no signal.
  • Do your grocery shopping in San Gil if you plan to cook during your stay; the selection is wider than in Barichara.
