Our Heritage

A countryside retreat, connection with nature and the country atmosphere

Just a 10-minute drive from Barichara, one of Colombia’s most beautiful colonial towns—where cobblestone streets, history, and tranquility can be felt in every corner—there is a small place where the countryside breathes peacefully and time seems to slow down.

Welcome to Arbolitos de Don José, a simple and lively space, surrounded by nature and fresh air. From the balcony you can take in the open landscapes of Barichara, enjoy golden sunsets, and when night falls, look up to find a sky full of stars.

This place bears the name of Don José, my grandfather, as we affectionately call him in our Santanderean land. He deeply loved nature and spent years planting fruit trees on this land with patience and love. Each tree holds a piece of his story.

Arbolitos de Don José was born to honor his memory and share this little piece of countryside with those who wish to pause for a moment, breathe deeply, and feel calm again.

Frequently asked questions

What guests ask most about booking, arriving and staying at Arbolitos de Don José.

Why book direct instead of through Airbnb or Booking.com?

Booking at losarbolitos.dedonjose.com means you pay the real price of the stay, without the service fee platforms add at checkout (typically 14%–20%). You also talk directly to the host family over WhatsApp before, during and after your stay, get more flexibility on arrival times, and we can arrange extras such as celebrations or late arrivals. Same house, no middlemen.

How do I pay for the booking?

To confirm your booking you pay a 20% deposit online. The remaining 80% is paid on arrival. We accept debit and credit cards, PSE and Nequi through Wompi, and cryptocurrency (BTC, ETH, USDT and others). You will get a confirmation email with your booking ID as soon as the deposit clears.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel free of charge up to 7 days before your arrival date and we refund the deposit in full. Cancelling within 7 days of arrival makes the deposit non-refundable, but you can move it to new dates within the following 6 months, subject to availability. Message us on WhatsApp for any change — we always look for a solution.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 3:00 p.m. and check-out is by 12:00 p.m. We welcome you in person at the house: a few days before arrival we send you the exact Google Maps location and agree an approximate arrival time over WhatsApp. If you are coming by public transport from Barichara or San Gil, let us know and we will help arrange the transfer.

Is there Wi-Fi? Can I work remotely from the house?

Yes. The house has Wi-Fi throughout, stable enough for video calls, email and streaming, plus good mobile data coverage. There are comfortable places to work indoors and on the balcony overlooking the Barichara countryside. If you plan to work during your stay, message us beforehand and we will confirm the latest measured speed.

Is there parking? Can I drive to the house?

Yes. There is free on-site parking for 2 vehicles. You can drive right up to the house; the final stretch is a well-maintained unpaved road and you do not need a 4x4 under normal conditions. Having a car makes it easy to move between the house, Barichara and Guane, though we can also arrange local taxis for you.

How far is the house from Barichara?

We are about a 10-minute drive from the centre of Barichara, surrounded by countryside. That distance is exactly the point: you get the silence, the sunsets and the starry skies of rural Santander, and you are still only minutes from the town, its restaurants and the trailhead of the Camino Real.

How many people can stay?

Exact capacity and the extra-guest rate are shown on each accommodation page and in the availability search. The place works especially well for couples, families and small groups who want the whole house. If you are a larger group, message us and we will work out the best arrangement together.

Are meals included? Is there a kitchen?

The house has a fully equipped kitchen so you can cook your own meals; you can shop in Barichara or San Gil on your way up. Barichara also has an excellent restaurant scene 10 minutes away. If you would like the fridge stocked on arrival or a special breakfast arranged, tell us in advance over WhatsApp.

When is the best time of year to visit?

Barichara has pleasant weather year-round, with warm days and cool nights. The driest stretches are December–February and June–August, ideal for walking the Camino Real. Between March and June you may catch hormiga culona season, Santander's most famous delicacy. Colombian long weekends fill up fast — if you are travelling then, book several weeks ahead.
